Interior Design Process
What to Expect When You Partner With Nandina
We do our best to make the interior design process as easy as possible for you. Learn more about our process below to see how we can help you customize your home or business.
- 1. Initial Project Consultation
- 2. Design Planning
- 3. The Presentation
- 4. The Commitment
- 5. The Execution
- 6. The Reveal
Our interior design process begins with an initial consultation in your home or business. During this time we work hard to get to know you, uncover details about the project, and better understand your vision. We also want you to get to know us and how we work. During the consultation, we often take pictures and measurements and discuss your budget and time frame. If both parties agree that the relationship is a good fit, we move forward with the design plan.
The planning phase of the interior design process is very specific to your personal design needs. The level of design planning will vary based on the scale of your project: do you need a one room plan? A full-scale new home build? An office renovation? Your needs will determine both the scope and retainer cost for your interior design project. We will discuss these items up front before any planning is done, and keep you informed each step of the way.
The design planning process is highly collaborative. We’ll ask you to provide our team with inspiration photos, share any color and style preferences, and answer questions about the way you’ll live and/or work in the finished space. Your answers will guide our team’s discovery as we pull together furnishings, finishes, accessories, and everything in between to help bring your vision to life.
This is the fun part! Once your design plan is complete, you’ll meet with our design team for a design presentation. During the presentation, we’ll go over every piece of our design recommendations for your space. We’ll review a mood board, floor plans, recommended furnishings and finishes, paint colors or wall treatments, decorative accessories, art and fabric schemes, and more.
The length of the presentation process varies. For smaller (one or two-room) projects, it may be a single presentation. For very large projects we may have a few different presentations over several months. It all depends on the scope of your project.
After the presentation, you’ll have the opportunity to review the design proposal and pricing recommendations. To move forward does not require that every aspect of the plan is perfect. Many times the plan will need to be refined or slightly changed—but that’s okay! We’re in it together.
Most of the execution happens behind the scenes, so you can sit back and relax while our team takes care of all the heavy lifting: detailed measuring, fabrication of drapes and soft goods, and ordering and checking up on product delivery.
This phase of the process requires project management, skill, commitment, and organization—all areas that we at Nandina excel in. Our team will keep you informed along the way so if anything happens that will affect the plan or timeline, you’ll be the first to know.
The moment you’ve been waiting for! This is where everything comes together. All of the swatches, renderings, and art we’ve discussed over the course of the project have finally come together. We do try to do a true “reveal” in one large installation (rather than slowly installing piece by piece) because it is truly transformative. There’s nothing like walking into your newly transformed space for the first time. Your design team will coordinate with you in regards to scheduling the install date.
We’re Here to Support You
For Years to Come
At Nandina, we’re all about building real relationships. We want you to like us as much—if not more—at the end of the process as you do at the beginning. We work to develop a long-term relationship built on trust and operate with the notion that we are a resource for you through every step of the process. Even once your project is complete, you can come to our team with questions, modifications, or ideas for future projects. We’re here to help!
Our Clients Say it Best
We’re truly fortunate to have played even a small part in helping our fantastic clients create spaces that match their lifestyles. See what they have to say about working with our team.
“It's not any one thing, it's several reasons; exceptional service, attentive, individualized recommendations, attention to detail, knowledgeable and the relationship with the designer and the communication with the design team to obtain the vision you are seeking with the superior quality of products they offer. I couldn't have asked for anything more in making my house into a home I am proud of.”
“We designed this house to be our dream home, a place to put down roots and raise our children. We had a clear vision in terms of features and finishes for the house so it was very important to us to work with designers that were able to help fill our home with an equal expectation of style, comfort and livability. We’ve had the privilege of working with several designers at Nandina and truly consider them friends. They work cohesively as a team while each bringing a unique element to the overall design. Nandina helped us choose quality pieces and layer in quirky and casual touches to keep everything fun and welcoming. We live in every inch of our home and wanted furnishing where friends, kids and dogs all feel welcome. Nandina was our dream team for our dream home and we look forward to continuing to work together for many years to come.”
“What I appreciate in working with the Nandina Atlanta team is that they visualize a design based on the needs and goals of all parts involved and then based on the relationship built, they add the specific details to our liking!”
“Nandina’s approach to design encourages active collaboration, while still allowing their vision to shine. I always feel like I am being led and engaged in the process but not forced into decisions. I recently completed my second project with Nandina and the results are far more impressive than I could have imagined. Nandina has continued to evolve and navigate the delicate balance between trendy, classic and comfortable and I can’t wait for an opportunity to work with them again.”
“Nandina has a remarkable design team with refreshing ideas and are always professional. We are so very happy our design team pushed us out of the box! I would never go anywhere BUT Nandina. Thank you for being such a classy store.”
“I was in the process of redoing my master bedroom, bathroom, sitting room and guest room when I realized that I needed professional help. The Nandina team came to my home and met with me and then developed a great plan for furniture, draperies and linens. They were able to pull everything together into a very cohesive, comfortable and beautiful design that I truly love. They were great to work with - I highly recommend them.”
“This was an experience of a lifetime, and one we will treasure always. We look forward to sharing our beautiful home with friends and family for years to come. Nandina has a rare talent and keen sense of understanding what the client wants and is comfortable with. It was such a joy for me to look at the choices and say “I love that” vs. “What was she thinking?!” Working with the Nandina team spurred me to move room to room and update and refresh along the way. My family has been continually amazed and astonished by the transformation. I look forward to continuing to come into Nandina to see all the beautiful furnishings and accessories, and of course will spread the word on what wonderful service they provide.”
“We at Wolf Construction have been very impressed with the products and services offered to us by Nandina Home and Design. We have had the pleasure of working closely with them to stage a showcase home in Three Runs Plantation. Their consultants were personable, knowledgeable, and committed to meeting my needs. They took care of every detail to make this home attractive to potential home buyers. I am certain that the value added by their services was largely responsible for a timely sale of this beautiful home. I would highly recommend them to anyone considering their services.”
“I feel very lucky to have found my designer when I bought a home in the French Quarter of historic Charleston, SC. In the first moments, they were able to take charge and deftly utilize my existing furniture and art, then added upholstery pieces, case - goods, drapery, wallpaper, accessories and lighting. I was looking for a more masculine and eclectic “Mid Century Modern” vibe. The look and feel turned out perfectly sublime and everyone that has walked in the house always asked for the name of my designer. Their overall sense of design, scale and color are simply amazing. I am beginning a new project in Charleston area, and have not considered looking anywhere else for someone to lead the design.”
“My designer elevates space beyond its purpose with grace, warmth, and a classic style. They approached each room of my empty island home as a part of the whole, drawing out moods and memories not yet realized. They expertly negotiated my need for some family antiques balanced with colors, fabrics, and lighting. Their design eye harmonized who we are as a family with how we live. My attention to selecting everything from sofas to stemware was made a priority. Part of the benefit of working with them is the dialogue; they are keenly observant and a great listener who responded with creative ideas that now define our home. I thoroughly enjoyed working with them and would recommend them unconditionally.”

“We are thrilled with our home and are sending heartfelt thanks to all those at Nandina that made it possible. The entire Nandina team went above and beyond to transform our condo from something ordinary into a home that’s extraordinary! There was no hurdle, logistically or otherwise, that wasn’t resolved smoothly and with a smile. We have traveled and moved many times, and we were hoping to have a home that reflected our travels, but also one that felt warm and welcoming to those visiting. Our Nandina designer, who planned the entire design remotely, accomplished exactly that. Our home isn’t any one type of design, it is unique to us, and we couldn’t be happier! ”

Frequently Asked Questions
There are many factors to consider when choosing an interior designer. First and foremost, ask lots of questions. Some to consider:
- What is your philosophy about interior design?
- Would you say you have a specific “style” in your designs?
- Why is interior design important to you?
- Have you taken on any similar projects?
- What level of communication can I expect throughout the project?
- How much input do you want/need from me throughout the process?
In addition, make sure you choose an interior designer whose work you have seen and like. To explore Nandina’s work, view our project portfolio.
Using an interior designer is often perceived as a luxury and as an extra expense, but the reality is a good design team will help you manage costs and bring real value to the selection and purchasing process.
Although the total cost will vary based on the size of the project, at Nandina we understand the art of investing in the right pieces while staying within the confines of a realistic budget. In the long run, we believe that the end product justifies our value to your project.
I only need help with the design, not purchasing. Do I have to purchase furniture and products through Nandina if I hire you?
We provide design services at every level – from simple floor plans to full-scale ground-up design-build and furnish projects. We explore with each potential client what their project entails and at what level they are seeking support. Our design plans can range from a one-hour in-home consultation at $250 to a full-scale design-build and interiors budget. What we can promise is that there are never any surprises when it comes to your money. If you want only a plan we estimate what that will cost based on our design hourly fees.
We will share that estimate with you, and get your commitment prior to executing any work. If it is a long-term project a budget is predetermined and you are kept informed every step of the way.
We often encourage potential clients to schedule a complimentary in-store consultation first so that you can see our studio and meet our design team. During this 30 to 45 minute meeting you can ask questions about the design process, review plans, and discuss the scope of your project. We have become very comfortable with video conferencing and now offer this complimentary design consultation via a Zoom meeting.
For an initial project consultation with one of our professional designers, the fee is $250. During this visit, our designer will discuss your wants and needs, your color and style preferences, your budget, will look at your existing belongings that you’d like to keep and incorporate into your new design, and will also take preliminary measurements to estimate the costs involved with executing your new design.
The cost of a one-room design plan is determined by the designer based on the size, scope, and needs of your project. This design plan can include, but not limited to, a design mood board, recommended furnishings, additional recommendations as needed including paint colors, wall treatments, decorative accessories, art, and fabric schemes, pricing of all recommendations, as well as a furniture layout of your room.
Every designer will require approval prior to ordering any product for your project. At times, there are circumstances that require elements of a design plan to change and, in this case, timely communication with your design team is preferred.
Special ordered pieces/products are not returnable. In rare instances, a specially ordered product may need to be returned, at which point your designer may determine a restocking fee based on that specific vendor’s policy.
Different designers have different preferred methods of communication but as a general guideline:
- Phone calls are always welcome!
- Please email your design team with any proposed changes to your design plan. This allows the team to receive and acknowledge the change and get back to you with any pricing or timing changes.
- If you have an emergency issue that requires an immediate response, please call your respective store directly (Aiken, Atlanta, Greenville).
