2017: The Year Of The Organized Home
Well hello there 2017!
It’s that time of the year again…the beginning of a new year, a chance to start fresh, a time to make resolutions.
Can a new year really mean a “new you”? It honestly depends on how much effort you put into your goals, and what exactly those goals are. Inevitably the worst will happen: we’ll make resolutions that we never keep or follow through with. It’s a combination of lofty goals and unrealistic expectations, mixed with the fact that a new year is still a year filled with all of life’s stresses. Instead of trying to lose 50 pounds or not drink wine in 2017, why not give yourself reasonable goals that allow you to continuously reach them? For example, strive to speak kindly and listen earnestly. Make an effort to eat more fruits and vegetables throughout your week.
And our personal favorite: create an organized and clutter-free home!
There’s nothing more satisfying, in our opinion, than coming home to a clean and organized home. Follow our tips for staying organized in your home – and how to keep it that way!
Everything in your home should have a place that it “lives”. Once you know where things belong, it becomes a lot easier to put them back when you’re finished with them. If it’s an item you use frequently, make sure the storage place is easy to access. If it’s something you only break out for special occasions or holidays, like decorations, keep those boxed up and placed out of sight in an attic or storage closet.
Utilize baskets, trays, and boxes. We all own smaller items, and sometimes we just don’t know what to do with them or where to put them! Boxes are great for storing papers, magazines, and other knick-knacks to keep things looking clean and uncluttered. Trays are a nice solution for displaying a few interesting items, such as a flower vase, candles, a few books, and a fascinating trinket. We like to utilize baskets for storing a few blankets in the living space—perfect for when guests come over!
Shelving is your new best friend. No matter what your personal design style – modern or traditional – you should have some sort of shelving in your home. This can be in the form of built-ins, etageres, bookcases, cabinets, floating shelves, or display cases. Seriously the list goes on and on. Shelving provides a space for you to put some of your treasures on display, and keep them from cluttering up the rest of your home. If the item is quirky, beautiful, or a family heirloom, you should be putting it on display!
Clean a little bit every day. This seems like such a simple thing to do, but the reality is, we get caught up with life and often put this off until things have piled up – literally – and the task becomes daunting. Make it your mission to spend 5 minutes a day putting things away and cleaning small areas of your home. We think you’ll find it both easy to do and extremely rewarding.
Finally, give yourself time to relax and enjoy your home! If you’re going to put a lot of time and energy into your home, you need to be able to enjoy it! In our opinion, nothing is better than coming home to a clean house filled with the ones we love.
Make 2017 the best year yet— not only for yourself, but for your home as well!
